Fashion Week in New York City begins today, designers from around the world will be showing their collections to buyers, the press and general public.  The New York shows are one of five major fashion weeks with the others being in Paris, London, Berlin and Milan and all the designers will be premiering clothing for Spring/Summer 2015.

New York Fashion Week was initially called Press Week and was started in 1943 during World War II when fashion buyers and the press were unable to travel to Paris for the traditional shows.

The show was put together by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert and was meant to put the focus on American designers who had previously been “ignored” by fashion journalists for their more well known French counterparts.

The shows were all held at The Plaza Hotel, with 53 designers showing, only the press were allowed to view the showings, buyers had to go the designer’s showrooms.  The shows proved to be a huge success and fashion magazines that were usually filled with French designs began adding more and more American designs to their pages.

Today Mercedes-Benz is the sponsor of NY Fashion week and the shows have gone from hotels to “The Tents” at Bryant Park and today are held at Lincoln Center.

I always enjoy watching the fashion shows online, usually after they have been held and are available on YouTube, but now you can watch them online as they’re happening on  You can also visit NYFWL website and see the schedule for all the fashion shows and when your favorite designers will be showing.

Of course Project Runway reveals the winner for the current season after they and the other finalists show their collections at Fashion Week.

Stay tuned over the next several days as we post pictures and videos from NYFW and our favorite fashion shows in addition to regular scheduled design posts.  Enjoy!!!
