Anniversary Celebration

This past weekend we celebrated my parent’s 50th Wedding Anniversary, as luck would have it, their anniversary fell on Sunday this year so we were able to have the afternoon party/reception on their actual anniversary date.  We kept it simple with cake, cookies, punch and coffee and had it in my hometown of Hydro, Oklahoma.  Hydro is where my parents were both raised as well as my grandparents and great grandparents.  We had the party in the Community Building which is a building built during the 1930’s and as a WPA project, this building holds great memories for everyone in Hydro so it seemed a perfect place for the anniversary party.

50 years ago mom and dad’s wedding colors were blue and white so I took that as my cue for decorating with white table cloths and blue and white flowers. We brought in some gold for the golden anniversary in confetti and gold wrapped candy scattered on the tables, we also used a gold under cloth and my grandmother’s lace table cloth on the table by the front door that held a the guest book.

I want to share some pictures I took of the tables and decorations, unfortunately I got caught up in the fun of the party and didn’t take any pictures when guests were at the party, but we had about 90 people show up, a great time was had by all and lots of new memories were made. Enjoy!!!

We also brought in a little yellow or gold color by using some artificial Forsythia wreaths on the tables. This is my grandmother’s lace table cloth over gold on the guest book table.

There are hopefully plans in the future to renovate the Community Building in Hydro, as you can see by the floors it has great bones, just needs an update and some tender loving care.

50thAnn - 25

Everyone was amazed that mom’s wedding dress is still in such great shape, a lady in Hydro that sewed for everyone made it in 1965 for mom for $5, that story was hard to digest for some people considering what some spend on dresses today.

That’s their original wedding book on the table and their wedding cake topper to the right of their black and white picture. We had their marriage license framed and on an easel.

A little better look at the 50 year old cake topper.

50thAnn - 20

We also have mom’s original blue garter.  We had blown up some color pictures taken after the ceremony in 1965.

50thAnn - 21

We had two tables filled with wedding memorabilia and framed family pictures and picture albums that mom has been working on for quite a while, all the family and guests really enjoyed the photos and albums.

50thAnn - 3

On the table were arrangements I made using blue hydrangeas and white carnations, mom used white carnations 50 years ago, as she told me, “we were on a tight budget”.

50thAnn - 5

Some of the arrangements were sitting in puddled blue satin fabric, all the arrangements were sitting in a forsythia wreath.

50thAnn - 8

We achieved gold sparkle on our tables with gold wrapped Kisses, chocolate hearts and 50th Anniversary confetti.  The candy we bought from Amazon and the confetti from a party store.

50thAnn - 30

Mom made cream cheese mints in the wedding colors and some in gold that said “50” on them, these are always a hit at any party.

50thAnn - 26

We had two cakes, Italian Cream and Chocolate Mousse from a bakery here in OKC, this was the perfect spot for a picture of the young couple at their reception 50 years ago.

50thAnn - 29

I did a large arrangement of hydrangeas, carnations and Snap Dragons in the center of the refreshment table along with a smaller arrangement and the mints on a MacKenzie Child’s cake plate.

I’m so glad we had this party, this is a big year for our family with this anniversary and a couple of big birthdays later this year for both mom and dad.  I’ll definitely share any other pictures we come across from the party as they become available. I hope you enjoyed this look at our time together with family and friends and what it took to pull it all together, have a great day.

Today’s photos are my own.

The deocrations were beautiful Tab! What a wonderful idea to have the reception in the community building. I still remember skating in there. We are planning a 50th for my husband’s parents this summer. I hope you don’t mind if I steal a few ideas. Your parents are such sweet people and I’m sure they truly appreciated this special day.

It all looks so beautiful Tab. I’m sure your parents had a fantastic time celebrating with their family and friends. I feel so lucky that I grew up in a place where I had wonderful role models. I love seeing the anniversary celebrations in the paper. What a beautiful legacy they have given all of us.
