Carol ~ A Tabulous Film

January 13, 2016

Over the weekend it was really cold here and snowed Saturday morning, this was the first weekend that I didn’t have to be decorating something for the holidays, house sitting, or getting ready for a holiday party so we took it easy Saturday morning and decided to see a movie. I had been wanting to see the new Todd Haynes film, Carol since I had heard about it. Now this movie won’t be for everyone but I knew it was set in mid-century New York so that means beautiful sets decorated in early American and 1950’s furniture.

The movie is also set at Christmas time and you get a great look at mid-century holiday decorations and of course, the costumes are gorgeous, just think Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe with maybe a little Sandra Dee thrown in. The movie follows the character of Carol Aird and her life as a gay woman living in 1950’s America, it focuses on her blossoming love for Rooney Mara’s character and what they have to go through to be together.

Carol is married (unhappily) to Kyle Chandler’s character and together they have a child. The film shows the anguish Carol Aird experiences in trying to live her life and at the same time keep her rights to see her child.

The movie is not a fast pace cliffhanger and my other half was not overly impressed by it, I enjoyed the story and would encourage anyone that likes a good period piece to see it as the acting was superb by all the actors involved and the set decoration, costumes and music are all wonderful.  The director Todd Haynes has also brought us The Velvet Goldmine and Far From Heaven starring Julianne Moore. Enjoy!!!

Cate Blanchett’s wardrobe throughout the film is wonderful, it gives us a real look at the fashion of the early 1950’s. The film takes place in late 1952 and early 1953. This red swing coat with a matching hat is worn over a black and red plaid suit.

I love watching anything Cate Blanchett in anything, her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I is my favorite since Bette Davis along with Galadriel from LOTR.

As you can see from this image of a motel room in the film no detail was overlooked. The walls are papered in vintage paper and the bedding is all done in vintage fabrics. At one point in the film, Rooney Mara’s character is painting her apartment and Michael leaned over to me and said, “that color is awful”, it was Mint Green which of course is becoming popular again, but apparently not at our house.

Carol wore this beautiful blonde mink coat during much of the film, I know we aren’t supposed to wear fur but it looked amazing on her.

Mara’s character is a young 20 something department store clerk and aspiring photographer, her makeup was flawless and she looks much younger than her true age of 30, she looked even younger with the young wardrobe she wore and bright plaid accessories.

This is a scene from the first time we meet Blanchett’s character of Carol, she’s Christmas shopping for her young daughter and is interested in a train sold in Mara’s character’s department.

This scene was charming as Therese tries to emulate the behavior and actions of Carol, don’t you love that hat.

Here’s Todd Haynes and his two stars, Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

Like you I love anything Cate Blanchett does She is always perfect. I am laughing through all of this cause it just occurred to me that my formative years were spent in what is now referred to as vintage Ahhhhh the joys of growing old
