The 4th of July holiday has always been a big deal for my family, it was a holiday filled with good food, family & friends, fireworks, softball, and soapbox derby races. The small town my family is from, Hydro, Oklahoma, always has a big 4th of July celebration all day on the 4th of July. The day starts with soapbox derby races down Arapaho street which is the main north/south street in town and also on a hill. People from town and the country would build soapbox derby cars and then race them down the hill with the winners in different age brackets getting trophies. Right after the derby there would be a horseshoe tournament and in the afternoon there would be a softball and/or mushball tournament at the baseball diamonds at the high school, again local residents would put together teams made up of family and friends and play each other, this often goes late into the night and provides a lot of entertainment for everyone.
After sundown the ball tournament would take a break for a fireworks display, paid for and put on by the town, unfortunately, that has had to stop the last few years because of both the cost of fireworks as well as the danger involved. When I was little we always went to the country to my aunt and uncle’s house to eat, play games and shoot fireworks and then after they began having the celebration in town we would go to my grandma’s house for fried chicken, potato salad, and homemade ice cream, her house was close enough to the school that we could lay on quilts in her backyard and watch the fireworks display and go back for seconds. I honestly miss those days, we were all much younger, more innocent and I miss my grandma and other relatives that have since left us, but that’s what memories are for. I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe 4th of July, eat too much, get a little sunburn and hug your family if you’re with them today, Enjoy!!!
