Haunted House ~ Winchester Mystery House

I remember when I was a teenager reading a story about the reclusive woman, Sarah Winchester, heir to the massive Winchester Rifle fortune and the massive house she built in California outside of San Francisco. Sarah was married to William Winchester and his father Oliver had created the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, when her husband died in 1881 she inherited the company and $20 million dollars, equivalent to $500 million today. Following the death of her husband and their infant daughter Sarah moved to California from the East Coast in 1884, she bought an eight-room farmhouse in what is now San Jose, California. She immediately began renovating and building onto the house, construction on the house continued for the next 38 years, day and night 7 days a week. Today the house is known for the winding hallways and the staircases that go nowhere. Legend says Sarah Winchester was haunted by the ghosts of all the people that had been killed by Winchester guns and she built the house to keep the ghosts confused. Today you can tour the Winchester Mystery House and of course, there are special tours going on right now during Halloween. There’s also a movie coming out about Sarah and her monstrous mansion, starring Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester, the film is called Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built,  the trailer was released yesterday and I’ve added it to the photos below. Enjoy!!! (above via)

Today the mansion is known as The Winchester Mystery House… (via)

…it has 161 rooms including 40 bedrooms. (via)

The house has several strange staircases that don’t go anywhere. Here we have the Vertical Staircase. (via)

This staircase has a mirror installed at the curve to allow you to see who or what is waiting for you at the top of the stairs. (via)

Although the house is considered odd and creepy there are many beautiful elements in the house. Here we see some of the beautiful woodwork in the wood floors. (via)

This is the only known photo of Sarah Winchester, it shows her out for a drive at her San Jose home. Sarah died in 1922 of heart failure at the age of 83. (via)

Below is the trailer for the movie, “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built” that comes out in February 2018 and stars Dame Helen Mirren. I can’t wait!!!!
