On The Roof Of Milan Cathedral

Yesterday I shared with you the interior of the Milan Cathedral and today we are going up to the roof of the Cathedral. The Cathedral offers visitors the extraordinary chance to visit the rooftop, walk on the roof and see all of the amazing architecture that makes this place so special. The Cathedral at its highest point is 356 feet high and while you can’t go that high when you’re up there you are able to get quite a ways up and see amazing views. This was one of my favorite things we did on our vacation in Italy and I would definitely do it again if I ever find myself in Milan. When visiting the Cathedral you buy tickets to go in and you can buy them to visit the Cathedral and add-on visiting the roof as well, I encourage everyone to take this opportunity if you can. Join me now for a tour on high and Enjoy!!!

You have two options to get to the top of the Cathedral, stairs or an elevator. We opted for the elevator and this was one of the first views we had after we exited the elevator and went around the corner. The amount of statues and figures on the rooftop is astounding.

The decorations are endless with acanthus leaves, quatrefoils, acorns, and fleur de lis among the many shapes used.

Here you can see statues of saints, apostles, popes and other religious figures soaring up on pedestals from the roof of the Cathedral.

We had a beautiful day for our rooftop tour, we had been having clouds, rain, and snow but the last several days the clouds gave way to blue skies.

I always find the guttering fascinating on these churches, I have a soft spot for gargoyles.

A look down the side of the Cathedral and down on the main square in the center of Milan.

This is one of my favorite photos we took, I love how the shadows play across the architecture of the Cathedral.

Once you get to the highest part of the Cathedral roof there is a place to stop, rest and take photos. On this day it was cool with a brisk wind but the sun was bright and people were enjoying the bright cool weather.

From up here, you can see all the way to the Italian Alps and the modern downtown part of Milan.

The Golden Madonna, a statue from 1762, sits atop a spire at the height of 356 feet. There is a life-sized replica of the statue inside the Cathedral behind the main altar you can see and get an idea of how tall she is.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this look from the top of the Cathedral of Milan, check back tomorrow when I share one more place with you from our vacation. It’s one of my favorite places and I think it will be yours as well. Have a great day and Enjoy!!!
