Jeff Lewis “Flipping Out” House For Sale

October 19, 2018

By Tab Byrum

I love watching Jeff Lewis’ Bravo show “Flipping Out“, not so much for the flipping out but for the homes they work on and see what designs they come up with. I really like Lewis’ style and how he mixes contemporary and traditional or does traditional with a twist. The home we’re looking at today is one of his own that he’s been working on to flip. Lewis got his start as a house flipper but when the bottom fell out of the real estate market in 2008 he took design and decorating jobs to pay bills. Over the last few years as real estate has come back with a bang (for now) Lewis and his team has gotten back into the house flipping game. This home is ultra glamorous and contemporary inside and out with lots of amazing features. I really like the bold herringbone wood floors you’ll see in several photos as well as the all black kitchen, including the granite. This is the second time Lewis has owned this home, he previously bought it and flipped in 2003. This time around he bought the home for $2.4 million and after a major remodel the home is on the market for $7.95 million. The home has 3 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, all new electrical and plumbing along with a new foundation. Originally the house was Spanish in design from the 1920’s but as you can see it has a wonderful contemporary look to it now. Enough chit chat, I’ll give you more details with the photos, let’s start the tour. Enjoy!!!

The Haunting of Hill House from Netflix

October 16, 2018

By Tab Byrum

Last Friday the 12th I was very excited to watch the premiere of The Haunting of Hill House that was premiering on Netflix and it did not disappoint at all. The mini-series is based on author Shirley Jackson’s 1959 gothic horror novel of the same name. The book has been turned into two previous movies with the 1963 version being my personal favorite. In the original book and film, Hill House is a 90-year-old mansion built by a man named Hugh Crain who lived and died there. Hugh originally built the mansion for his young wife and daughter but his wife was killed in a carriage accident on the way to the house and never saw their home. His young daughter Abigail lives in Hill House with her father until he dies and she continues living there until her own death as an old woman. Many years later Dr. John Montague gathers a group of people who have experienced psychic phenomenon in their lives along with Luke the young man who is supposed to inherit Hill House, two “psychics” also show up, young ladies named Eleanor and Theodora. Together the group experiences sightings, loud noises and all kinds of evidence of ghosts and are scared to death. In the new version, the characters from the original novel are now a family with the Father being Hugh Crain, his wife Olivia and their five children taking on the names of some of the characters from the original book and film. The Netflix series is VERY well done with lots of thought given to paying homage to the book and original film. The special effects are wonderfully creepy with several scenes played out in complete silence for extended periods of time to build suspense, there’s also one “jump scare” that made me jump, clap my hands and laugh at myself. My favorite episode was episode 6, “Two Storms”, that was filmed with a single camera and done with only one break in the filming. The entire episode is like watching a play and was mesmerizing. If you enjoy spooky or horror then be sure and check out Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House and enjoy a wonderful 20th Century novel brought to life for 21st Century streaming and binging. Enjoy!!! Alphabet Legend Books

October 9, 2018

By Tab Byrum

I recently began seeing ads on Facebook for the Alphabet Legends books and was very intrigued. I went to the website for the books and am so happy I did, the story of the creation is simple and timeless and I love the art and message the books convey. Alphabet Legends was started by Australian author and illustrator Beck Feiner when she was trying to teach her oldest child, Levi, the alphabet and there wasn’t anything fun or unusual for a parent to use at home. In her words, “it’s hard to bond over B is for Banana.” This led to Beck creating an A to Z that she could use to teach her son and she centered it on things about Australia. Immediately Beck’s Instagram followers wanted a copy of the list and that led to books and posters and now today there are several books available on a wide range of people with amazing artwork that lets you teach your child, not only the alphabet but also about certain people associated with places and occupations known as the Alphabet Legends, there’s even a book for the Manchester United Soccer Team in the UK. Today we are going to look at five of the Alphabet Legend books, ranging from Alphabet Legend Americans to Legends in Fashion and Little Legends. These books will make awesome gifts for kids and grandkids, shower presents, baptism gifts, Christmas, you name it and these will be perfect. I love something that’s not only fun and artistic but is also educational…but not in a way that you feel like you’ve just attended a college lecture on a topic. Join me for a peek at Alphabet Legend Books and to see more of the selection visit the ALB website here. Enjoy!!!

This past weekend you may have seen if we’re friends on Facebook that I shared some news and photos from ShanTabulous STudios and if you did YAY!!! ShanTabulous is a new venture I’ve taken on with a friend of mine, Shana Myers, who is an Artist and Calligrapher here in Oklahoma City and has Ink Stained Fingers. Shana has a thriving business doing Calligraphy for parties and weddings and we’ve known each other for close to 20 years. I approached Shana a while back about combining our talents, hers in art and calligraphy and mine in florals and holiday work, and create something we could sell and would enjoy doing. We’re starting with the signs I’m sharing with you today but hope to have some wreaths for both indoor and outdoor as well as more signs for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We are going for an elegant look on some of our stuff as well as a Vintage or Retro look. We will be offering personalization on our boards and wreaths so if you want something specific with a greeting and your last name let us know. Everything is hand-painted front and back and the images are also hand-painted onto the boards. Shana does all our Calligraphy by hand, NO STENCILS OR PEEL AND STICK letters here. We now have an Etsy store up that you can view here and we’ll be adding a few more Halloween images later this week and get the other holiday merchandise up ASAP. Join me now for a look at these first five signs and let us know what you think, we hope you’re as excited about our products as we are. Enjoy!!!

By Tab Byrum

Black and yellow has always been one of my favorite color combinations and I love the new Queen Bee collection from MacKenzie-Childs that features this color combo. The collection has beautiful furniture pieces done in a traditional style as far as shape but then they’ve used traditional fabrics with a twist. Stripes, damask, and chenilles combine to create gorgeous chairs, sofas, loveseats, and ottomans often with a bee or honeycomb pattern thrown in. There are also wonderful lamps with the celebrated MacKenzie-Childs Black and White check combined with a beautiful yellow. Join me for a quick look at the Queen Bee collection and be inspired to embrace yellow, black, and white. Enjoy!!!

Decorative Hardware From Martin Pierce

October 2, 2018

By Tab Byrum

I always say you have to pay attention to the small special things in a room as much as you do the big things like wall color, finishes, and flooring. Things that can make a room extra special are what I think of as jewelry for a room, lighting and hardware and today we are going to look at a new company I recently found out about, Martin Pierce Custom Decorative Hardware.

Martin Pierce is an artist and sculptor who began creating beautiful hardware after he was unable to find anything unique, Martin also designs lighting and some furniture, taking his inspiration from nature. Martin is originally from England and moved to Los Angeles in 1980, he started with designing cabinet pulls and eventually began designing door handles, bathroom accessories and recently lighting. Martin uses the lost wax method of casting his pieces and all of them are original and copyrighted. Martin takes a lot of inspiration from insects but also has collections that focus on plants and trees like his Hedgerow and Willow collections as well as collections like the Lizard collection and Netuske collection which takes its inspiration from 17th-century  Japanese buttons and are miniatures of bumble bees, rabbits, lizards, and frogs. Today we are going to look at a sampling of Pierce’s work and we’ll come back and focus more in-depth on certain collections. For now, join me for a look at the work of Martin Pierce and Enjoy!!!
