New York City In June

June 18, 2018

By Tab Byrum

Hello everyone and Happy Monday!!! I hope you had a great weekend and were able to celebrate Father’s Day if it pertains to you or if your Dad is still here to celebrate. I just got home from a fun trip to New York City and I wanted to share with you what we did, where we ate and shopped while we were there. I went to NYC with my friend Donna and her daughter Bella who recently turned 16, for her birthday Bella asked for a trip to NYC with her mom and me and we surprised her and made it happened. NYC in the Spring is always fun and last week the weather was hard to beat. We did A LOT of shopping since Bella had asked for money from her family for her birthday and she loaded up on fun clothes and accessories to wear this Summer and when school starts back in a couple of months. Join me for a quick tour of the Big Apple and I’ll do my best to share all of our fun. Enjoy!!!

Ellen Degeneres is known as a great comedian and a consummate host on her daytime talk show and her wife Portia de Rossi is known for both her acting talents and her new art curation company, General Public, but when the two of them put their design hats on it creates beautiful homes. Over the years this Hollywood power couple has bought, redecorated and sold numerous houses, garnering them a reputation as real estate high rollers and their most recent acquisition will only add to that reputation. Degeneres and de Rossi recently bought a beachfront property outside of Santa Barbara that’s home to a 6,000 sq. ft. house, 883 sq. ft. guest house, tennis courts, swimming pool, all on 1.13 acre¬†of beach with magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean. The home is contemporary in style with white walls and lots of beautiful light colored wood throughout the home. Join me today for a tour of the home as we inspect photos and I’ll go into more detail with the images. Have a wonderful day and a great weekend, Enjoy!!!

Gray & White Checkered Floors

June 13, 2018

By Tab Byrum

Whether they’re painted on or whether they’re marble, I really, really, really like a gray and white checkered floor. I’ve talked before on here about loving black and white floors and I still do but I’m thinking this may be the way I want to go SOMEWHERE in our home. I love the way the gray and white look together, I think they are very elegant and chic looking as compared to the strongness in a black and white floor. The gray and white lends itself to any color combination as far as what you want to do with paint, fabric, art, and upholstery in your home. I’ve gathered some images of gray and white floors and I’ve included not just tile floors but also some that have been painted onto wood floors because I think that’s a charming way to do a wood floor, especially an old one. I hope you like what I’ve collected and I look forward to hearing from you. Enjoy!!! (image via)

Using Wicker All Year All The Time

June 11, 2018

By Tab Byrum

I recently read an article about how people are turning to wicker furniture to use both inside and outside their homes all year long and I have to say I really like the idea. For several years I had a wicker trunk I bought at Pier 1 I used as a coffee table then moved it to the bedroom where it was storage and a base for a TV. I’ve always loved the charm of an old beautiful piece of wicker furniture, whether it’s a single chair with lovely curves and a great bright cushion or maybe a wicker table with a glass top sitting next to a chair holding a lamp and a vase of flowers with space for your drink. Wicker pieces come in all sizes, colors, and styles and have traditionally been used on patios, porches and all kinds of outdoor areas but why not bring a favorite piece in the house? Maybe place a favorite piece in a corner of the living room with a beautiful new seat cushion that goes with your decor or maybe a piece in the corner of your bedroom. Wicker and rattan don’t have to be just for sitting, today you can also find wicker tables, desks, coffee tables and much more, both new and vintage. Today we are going to take a look at some photos of wicker used in homes as well as some pieces available from a wonderful vendor in France, Atelier Vime. So join me for a look at wicker and how you can incorporate it into your home, both outside and inside. Enjoy!!! (image via)

Awesome Lighting At Urban Chandy

June 6, 2018

By Tab Byrum

I was recently reading an article about a couple who had taken the upstairs portion of a barn and turned it into their home and in the picture of their dining area was an awesome chandelier over the dining table. Thankfully the article told who the maker of the light fixture was, a company called Urban Chandy. I have to be honest and tell you I was not familiar with the company but I am now and their products are everything you could want in fun, industrial, out of the ordinary lighting. I’ve told you before that I like to treat the lighting in a home like the jewelry, something special that adds some sparkle and pizazz to your outfit, or in this case the rooms of your home. My problem is that I like all kinds of lighting except for very traditional and Urban Chandy is NOT traditional. I love the use of retro kind of cords used in some of their pieces as well as the bare bulbs. They offer several different finishes and colors for their fixtures and their website also shows you how certain lights can be used in more than one area of the home. Join me today for a look at the beautiful pieces being created at Urban Chandy and Enjoy!!!

Elegant Lucite Shelves

June 4, 2018

By Tab Byrum

Last week I did a post on the new SoHo apartment¬†of TV personality Bethenny Frankel and in the post, I shared a couple of photos of her daughter’s bedroom. In one of the photos, there are lucite and brass shelves on the wall above her daughter’s desk (as seen above) and I REALLY like that look. I started checking them out online and there are several places to order but today I want to share just some looks I found online. I really like the look of these shelves, the way they almost disappear on the wall and I also like how they weigh so much less than glass or wood shelves. I’ve always like the look of glass shelving but it can get very heavy on the wall and on the pocketbook, I also always live in fear of glass shelves buckling or falling off the wall. I also like the look of the brass brackets that are used to mount the shelves on the wall, they give an elegant look to what otherwise would be just wall shelves. I definitely want to explore lucite and brass shelves for our home to display some collectibles and make something we have and enjoy a little more interesting. Enjoy!!! (above image via)

Bethenny Frankel’s New SoHo Loft

June 1, 2018

By Tab Byrum

If you’re a watcher of the Real Housewives of NYC then you are familiar with Bethenny Frankel, she was on the show in the beginning then left the show and is now back on the show. Bethenny has made a nice fortune for herself dealing in New York real estate both in NYC and in the Hamptons as well as creating her Skinny Girl Cocktail empire which she sold for over $8 million a couple of years ago. Earlier this year Bethenny unveiled her new apartment in the SoHo area of NYC and as Architectural Digest says, “it’s sleek and chic”. The apartment is a two bedroom apartment, just right for Frankel and her eight-year-old daughter, the home has several features I like that I’ll talk about below with the photos of the apartment. The apartment is very neutral as far as color with a lot of black, white and gray in the main living areas and Frankel’s bedroom with some color showing up in her daughter’s bedroom. So, grab a cup of coffee and join me for a home tour of an NYC Housewife and Enjoy!!!

Artwork Of Rachel Roe

May 30, 2018

By Tab Byrum

As you know I love stumbling onto people and their creations when I’m doing research for the blog and that’s what happened recently when I found artist Rachel Roe of St. Louis. Initially, I found an article about Rachel’s studio (a topic for another post) and that led me to her website, Rachel Roe Designs, and her Etsy page where she sells her paintings. Rachel works in her wonderful backyard studio at her St. Louis home, she’s a graduate of the University of Missouri where she studied Fine Art with an emphasis in graphic design. Rachel has been able to combine her love of art and her graphic design abilities and create wonderful paintings, all of them colorful and bold. She has painted some amazing still lifes of florals and fruit trees as well as Figurative art featuring Flight Attendants, School Girls, as well as Boy and Girl Scouts. I really enjoy the look of her paintings, some are casual and they all feel very relaxed to me, I hope you like them as much as I do. In addition to her paintings Rachel designs Logos, Patterns and does Hand Typography which she sells and is suitable for framing. For more information or to see more of Rachel’s work visit her website here and her Etsy page here. Enjoy!!! (above, Flowering Through The Frost)

Memorial Day 2018 ~ Remember The Fallen

May 28, 2018

By Tab Byrum

In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

~ John McCrae (1872-1918)

Geometric Home Decor

May 25, 2018

By Tab Byrum

On Wednesday we talked about the use of geometric shapes in design, we looked at a wallpaper, tile, rugs, and painting shapes on walls. Today we are going to continue with that theme and look at Geometry and shapes in home decor. Shapes have long been the inspiration for certain pieces, who hasn’t been on a hunt for the perfect square coffee table or a perfectly sized round table for the kitchen or breakfast room. We often frame our artwork or mirrors in rectangles to hang horizontally or vertically but aren’t round frames more interesting? Today you can find fun shapes everywhere, in vases, and pillows as well as clocks, wall hangings and even headboards for your bed. Take a look at the fun geometry inspired items I found today and as always, Enjoy!!! (via)
