Cranberry Orange Shortbread Cookies at Mom On Timeout

December 18, 2018

By Tab Byrum

I LOVE SHORTBREAD COOKIES, they are seriously one of my favorite cookies and they are SO versatile they can be dressed up with nuts, flavorings, and fruits or kept simple and timeless just as shortbread. I had recently seen a recipe for Orange Cranberry Shortbread on the Mom On Timeout website and I loved how they looked and wanted to see if they taste half as good as they look and they do!!!! We made them last Friday when I went to Mom and Dad’s for the day, the recipe is fairly simple and if you bake a lot you may have most everything needed except for Craisins. I’ll attach a link to the recipe for the cookies at the end of the photos and I’ll go into more detail on the cookies with the photos. If you like orange and tart cranberries then give these a try, they also have almond extract which is one of my favorite flavors. They’re slightly crunchy from the sugar on the outside but soft and chewy in the middle with little bites of berry and orange zest. SO GOOD!!!! Enjoy!!!

Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

December 17, 2018

By Tab Byrum

Last week I told you I was going to Mom and Dad’s for the day to see them, have lunch and help mom with some baking and today I wanted to share the results. If we’re friends on Facebook here or here you’ve already seen them but I’ll share recipes and more photos in today’s post. We used to make lots of cut out cookies and decorate them, at one time we even did them for all the holidays and sold cookie bouquets and at one time we also did custom cakes for people for people so luckily we have a little experience with baking, icing, and decorating. We used a new recipe we found this year on the 12 tomatoes website for Sour Cream Sugar Cookies and they are so so good. They were a little sticky when we first started rolling out so we kneaded in a little more flour and let them get really cold in the refrigerator and floured our board really well when we attempted rolling and cutting the dough again and it worked great. For the icing, we used good old buttercream icing that we used to use on 90% of the cakes we did. It’s easy to work with, takes color well and you can pipe and decorated the cookies using any of the cake decorating tips we already had. I’ll go into a little more detail with the photos. If you’re up for baking this is a great recipe and I’m sharing a link to it at the end of the post. Share your photos if you bake and decorate cookies, have a great week as we count down to a big weekend coming up. Enjoy!!!

Royal Wedding ~ Wedding Cake

May 11, 2018

By Tab Byrum

Let’s be honest, we’re all always happy for the newly married couple when it happens but why do we show up to their weddings? The answer simply is CAKE!!!!!! In America we have a tradition of a wedding cake being a white cake, sometimes they are flavored. I’ve seen Strawberry Wedding cake, Italian Cream Wedding cake, and Angel Food Wedding cake, heck here in Oklahoma I’ve even seen wedding pies. At the royal wedding next week it’s been announced the couple has chosen a Lemon Elderflower cake with Buttercream frosting ( I love buttercream). It will be decorated with fresh flowers, it’s being made by Claire Ptak of Violet Cakes in London. Traditionally in England, wedding cakes and especially Royal wedding cakes have been some kind of fruitcake, not like Christmas fruitcake but a heavier cake with some kind of fruit baked in. The British don’t traditionally do a groom’s cake either but that tradition was broken by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when Prince William had a grooms cake done up in his and the Queen’s favorite Chocolate Biscuit Cake. Today we are taking a look at Royal Wedding cakes and all the amazing design that goes into creating them. As a former and still sometimes cake decorator I can tell you that these cakes are major tasks to take up. So, pull up a plate and a fork and Enjoy!!!

Christmas Candy From Vermont Country Store

December 13, 2017

By Tab Byrum

Candy plays a HUGE role in my family at Christmas, my mom has always been the candy maker and I shared her easy to make and delicious to eat recipe for Chocolate Peanut Clusters here a couple of years ago. When I was growing up I worked in the grocery store in my hometown from the time I was 14 until I graduated from college and at Christmas, we all looked forward to the candy. Christmas candy of all shapes, sizes, and flavors was ordered in bulk and it was our job to unpack it, weight it, price it and display. Hours were spent filling clear bags full of chocolate drops, gumdrops, candy canes, orange slices and so much more. We set up a big table at the front of the store and filled it with bags of candy, I can smell the chocolate and orange slices now sitting here while I’m typing. Today I want to share the candy choices you can order online and have shipped to you at Vermont Country Store, they have a lot of the old favorites as well as some I’ve never heard of but would love to try. All of these would make great gifts for hard to buy for family and friends, great stocking stuffers or just look and taste great sitting out in dishes in your home during the holidays. It’s still 12 days until Christmas but order soon. Enjoy!!! (remember to click on anything in Orange to visit that items webpage)
