John Derian 2017

April 18, 2017

By Tab Byrum

Tomorrow I’m heading to New York City for a few days, I’ll give you more details on the trip tomorrow, but I thought today we would look at one of my favorite NYC artists/shopkeepers, John Derian. Derian is known for his wonderful decoupage art, all his decoupage is done in his New York studio using images he reproduces from his large collection of vintage prints, all the images are transferred to handblown glass. John Derian’s images come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes including ovals, round, rectangles, and multi-piece wall hangings. I have a couple of the smaller trays and paperweights he’s created but I aspire to one of the multi-piece wall hangings. Today I want to share some of the newer pieces since we last checked in on John Derian, I love his use of florals, animals, and especially the more “unique” pieces such as the multi-piece skeleton wall hanging. I hope you like the work of John Derian as much as I do and remember you can see his work here and order online if you can’t make it to New York. Enjoy!!! ( above image Roses III)

Fernando Botero From Assouline Publishing

November 3, 2016

Today we are looking at Fernando Botero, a beautiful new book from author Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz Fisac and distributed by Assouline Publishing. Botero is regarded as one of the greatest and the most recognized artist from Latin American and with very good reason. At this point in his career, Botero has created more than 3,000 paintings and 200 sculptures and his work is known worldwide because of the specific look of “Boteroism”.  This book looks at not only the breadth of work by Botero but we also get to hear from the artist himself and he talks about not ever really “knowing” how to paint and how an artist can never lose the drive to develop one’s own personal style. One amazing thing about this book is that we are able to see works by Botero that have never before been published. The book is by author Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz Fisac, an author, critic, and curator who has written for Assouline Publishing before and she has also previously written on Botero as well as curated exhibits of his work. If you have an art lover on your gift list or someone that loves Botero this would be an amazing gift this holiday season. Check out the Assouline website here for more information on Fernando Botero , in the meantime here are some images from the book and Assouline, Enjoy!!!

Gifts For Dad: Denim Umbrella From London Undercover

June 15, 2016

I have to make a confession, I have a thing for accessories. Whether it’s scarves and gloves in the winter or sunglasses year round, my motto is “it’s the little things that count”. So my love of accessories squealed out loud when I recently discovered the British website London Undercover and their awesome umbrellas or as they refer to them, Solid Stick Umbrellas, especially one type of umbrella they market, the D-LUX Denim Solid Stick Umbrella. The Undercover website says the umbrellas are inspired by French field workers and the indigo dyed brollies (umbrellas) of the early 20th Century. The umbrellas are made of a special cotton denim that is waterproof, they are available in 3 shades of blue, which I’ll share with you, and a solid hickory stick and handle. You can even have up to five initials put on the leather strap of the umbrella. I think these are so sharp and would be a great gift for anyone, year round. Join me for a look at the “brollies” and visit the Undercover website for more umbrellas and info., Enjoy!!!

Gifts For Dad: No Show From J. Crew

June 14, 2016

One of my favorite things to wear these days are No Show Socks, I’ve always loved wearing tennis shoes and loafers with no socks, especially in the hot months, but sadly my feet sweat and I’ve been known to ruin some shoes. Today though you can find all kinds of fashionable and colorful socks that are cut low enough they don’t show above the tops of your shoes, thus No Show. J. Crew has some great choices in No Shows that will make great gifts for Dad, especially since it’s become fashionable for the guys to show some ankle, even in their dressier moments. You may have also noticed that lengths are shorter on some of the pants and jeans and No Show socks are perfect to wear with them. Personally, I’ve gotten to where I wear No Show socks throughout much of the year. Here’s a small selection of J. Crew’s choices in No Show Socks, check out the rest online or in your local store, Enjoy!!!

Gifts For Dad: Game of Thrones Attire

June 13, 2016

You can pretty much find a t-shirt that shows your support for any cause, movie and TV show, case in point are socks and t-shirts displaying sigils and saying from Game of Thrones. If your Dad or husband is a GoT fan then you need to check out the HBO website for the hugely popular TV series. Here at our house, we started out as book readers of the Fire and Ice series, long before there was ever any talk of a movie or TV series (yes, we’re those people, the book people) and we LOVE the TV show. I had recently ordered some socks I saw online just for fun and that got me to thinking about Game of Thrones merchandise as gifts and after a little poking around on the internet I found the HBO treasure trove. They have t-shirts for all the major houses as well as shirts with some of the famous dialogue and quips from GoT characters, they also have dress socks with sigils of the house on them, that way you can take Game of Thrones to work with you every day and no one is the wiser, here’s a look at a few of the great merchandise available and remember, “I drink and I read, so I know things.” Enjoy!!!

olivergaldads_13

A few weeks ago I did a whole week looking at the great artwork available from Oliver Gal, I went back and looked at more works and saw several I think would be great as gifts for Dad. I think their Blueprint collection is so fun, they take so many commonplace items as well as items we all hold near and dear and create a look for them in blueprint form. You can find a blueprint for most sports, toys as well as movie characters (think Star Wars or Back To The Future). I’m also sharing some fun celebrity art that Oliver Gal offers and Pop Art, take a look at the samples I’m sharing with you today and visit the Oliver Gal website and order something special for Dad. Enjoy!!!
