Oscar de la Renta

Mr. de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic in 1932 to well to do parents who counted among their friends top military leaders as well as leading poets and scholars of the time.
de la Renta left the Dominican Republic for Spain when he was 18 to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando located in Madrid. While there he began doing sketch work for some of the leading Spanish fashion houses and this quickly led to his being an apprentice to Cristóbal Balenciaga. Later de la Renta became a couture assistant at the House of Lanvin in Paris.

At the age of 31 de la Renta sought out advice from Diana Vreeland, he wanted to get into the ready to wear business because he felt that was where there money was, Vreeland advised him to go to work for Elizabeth Arden and he did. A couple of years later he began working for Jane Derby and when she died a few months later de la Renta took over the Derby line, and as they say the rest is history.
Today the name Oscar de la Renta is synonymous with beauty, wealth and glamour as he dresses women from all over the world. He is known for amazing dresses and ball gowns rivaled by no other.
