Today Jeff Leatham is the artistic director of the Four Seasons George V Hotel in Paris.  This book will be available from Rizzoli on October 14, it’s definitely on my list.

The world has been waiting on this book forever, a definitive design guide on the world of Marella Agnelli and the homes she’s created for her family.  Agnelli was born an Italian princess and married Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli, she was one of the most photographed women of the 20th Century.  Marella Agnelli, The Last Swan chronicles the homes of Agnelli ranging from her New York apartment to homes throughout Italy and her retreat in Marrakech.  Known for her gardens as well as stunning interiors, Vogue Magazine has said, “this breathtaking tome charts the life of the goddess of style….”.  This book is published by Rizzoli and will be available October 14.

Interior Design

Simplicity is the first book for interior designer Nancy Braithwaite and as the name implies it focuses on the less is more school of thought.  “Luxuriously minimalist” is how Braithwaite’s style is described with her focus in the book being on three different styles: Country, Classic and Contemporary.  She focuses on craftsmanship in design and uses several homes she’s designed in a 40+ year career to illlustrate her points.  Simplicity will be available from Rizzoli on October 14.

Total Design is a tome celebrating Modernist Design in Architecture, taking you on tours of homes that are “conceived as complete works of art”.  The author, George H. Marcus, shows you homes designed by names such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Gio Ponti and looks at all styles from Arts and Crafts up to 21st Century.  This book would be an excellent gift for any architect or a fan of modern architecture, it will be available from Rizzoli on October 14.

Author Misha de Potestad gives us this definitive tome on the design style known as Vintage Industrial.  Born in the first half of the 20th Century, Vintage Industrial style came about due to the fast growing needs of a rapidly growing workforce.  Creators and designers of this time discovered new ways to work with iron and steel and mold it into lighting, furniture, storage and decorative items.  This book is a must for anyone “into” Industrial Design as it’s filled with gorgeous photos of homes, workshops, factories and warehouses.  October 14 is the date of availability for this book from Rizzoli.

Interior Design

Frank Lloyd Wright is hailed as one of the greatest American architects, but as this book goes to show Wright was just as concerned with the interiors of his designs as he was the outside.  Frank Lloyd Wright The Rooms gives us a look inside the fabled homes he designed and shows us how he designed what he felt was needed when he couldn’t find it.  From furniture to lighting and windows, Wright designed all of it.  This book takes us on a journey through Wright’s work from the living room of Fallingwater to Hollyhock House in Los Angeles.  This book will be available on October 21 from Rizzoli.

Fashion & Photography

This book is a revised version of an earlier release, written by Oleg Cassini to document his time as the designer to Jacqueline Kennedy.  Cassini was chosen and hired by Mrs. Kennedy to design her personal wardrobe and his designs were seen all over the world as the First Lady traveled as an ambassador for both her husband and America.  This book is filled with over 200 photographs of Jackie Kennedy in Oleg Cassini creations as well as Cassini’s original sketches of clothing designs.  During the 1,000 days the Kennedy Administration occupied the White House Cassini created over 300 outfits for Mrs. Kennedy and coordinated all aspects of her wardrobe.  This book is not only a beautiful tribute to Jackie Kennedy and her style but the gorgeous creations of Cassini that defined this time in our history.  A Thousand Days Of Magic will be available on October 21 from Rizzoli.

Art & Design

When Art Meets Design from Assouline is a look into the life and homes of artist Hunt Slonem.  Hunt’s homes are described as “fantastically decorated and meticulously restored”, taking a look at two Louisiana mansions that Slonem has restored and giving us a look at how an artist combines contemporary artwork with vintage furniture.  As we can see from the cover Hunt Slonem is not afraid of color and this tome provides us with fantastic pictures of his work.  When Art Meets Design will be available in October from Assouline.

Fashion & Movies

Dressing For The Dark is by stylist Kate Young,  a person used to working with celebrities and movie stars, in this book she brings the worlds of fashion and movies together.  Young talks about what she feels are some of the most influential films and how they’ve influenced the world of evening wear.  The book shows us how the white silk chiffon dress worn by Elizabeth Taylor in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof created a goddess craze to the gorgeous red number worn by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.  Kate Young is a much sought after stylist and often finds herself working with great photographers like Patrick Demarchelier and Annie Leibovitz and began her career at Vogue Magazine assisting Anna Wintour.  Dressing For The Dark will be available in October from Assouline.

Brian Van Flandern is not only an author, but also a Michelin three star mixologist known the world over for the cocktails he creates.  In this book Van Flandern shares cocktail recipes that are associated with some of the most iconic movie stars we’ve known.  Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Chaplin and Humphrey Bogart are just a few of the celebs that have inspired some of these concoctions.  Beautiful photography and easy to follow instructions make this tome a must have for any aspiring mixologist and lover of great films.  Celebrity Cocktails will be available from Assouline in October.

Furniture Design

This Tabulous Tome at $695 is hefty in price as well as physical size, but it’s also an amazing collection of some of the greatest furniture designs ever.  This collection is put together by Frédéric Chambre, and showcases one hundred years of form, technique and materials in furniture design.  The publisher Assouline refers to the book as  “a hand-bound oversize luxury edition, presented in a linen clamshell case, traces the development of twentieth-century design from the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements through Bauhaus and Art Deco, Pop Art and the Memphis school, to today’s digital age”.  The Impossible Collection Of Design celebrates the last century of design and definitely one for those hard to buy for people, it will be available in October from Assouline.

That’s it for this edition of Tabulous Tomes, let me know of any great books you see on your travels or perusing the internet and have a lovely day.
