Happy Birthday Pop!!!

By Tab Byrum

Today is a special day for the Byrum family, today is my dad’s birthday, he may kill me for telling you but he’s 79 today.

Pop with one of his best buddies, his bird dog Duke.

Dad is the youngest of 6 boys, born and raised on farms in Western Oklahoma.

Dad (grinning far left) with his mom and 5 brothers.

The year he graduated from Hydro High School he joined the  U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany, a big move for a young man who had never been far from home.

A young American soldier visiting Amsterdam on leave.

He fell in love and married my mom causing a little scandal in their small town along the way, Dad was 29 and mom was 19, they will be together 50 years this coming May.  My whole life Dad has worked in the telephone business, when I was little I always thought it was SOOOO cool because my Dad wore tall boots to work and climbed poles.

He has seen major changes in the telecommunications industry in the last 50 years.  Dad still works full time today for an independent telephone company in western Oklahoma and doesn’t really have any plans to retire.

My dad has always been one of my heroes, he has an awesome sense of humor and a way with words, he’s gentle and kind and while I’m his only child, he has 16 nieces and nephews that love their “Uncle Tom”.  Happy Birthday Pop, I love you!!!!
