Greenbriar Hotel & Resort

This time of year my thoughts turn to traveling, we don’t really do much in the summer since that’s when the prices are highest on travel and lodging, the crowds are larger and we aren’t big hot weather fans. One of the places on my list to visit is the Greenbriar Hotel & Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia in the Allegheny mountains.

The Greenbriar Hotel today is the original site of a spring of sulphur water that the locals began drinking, following the lead of local Native Americans, a prominent Baltimore family named the Calwells took over the property in the late 1700’s and eventually built cottages which they sold. In 1858,  a hotel was built and the rest is history.

The Greenbriar is known for it’s bright and colorful decor, instituted by famed Interior Decorator Dorothy Draper following World War II. Today the hotel and resort are still decorated in the colors Draper brought in but just in a more up to date fashion, over the years dignitaries and even royalty have stayed at the Greenbriar, including 26 U.S. Presidents. Join me as we take a look at the Greenbriar Hotel and Resort and maybe add it to your list of places to visit, Enjoy!!!

The Presidential Suite is one place to take in all the colors that Dorothy Draper brought to the Greenbriar in the 1940’s.

The guest room are beautiful, traditional and very tasteful.

I’m always all about the hotel bathroom, I hate it when websites don’t show you pics of the hotel baths, these are lovely.

The Greenbriar also has cottages that can be rented and can house several people.

Carleton Varney keeps up the Dorothy Draper inspired look and colors throughout the resort, here’s the interior of a cottage.

There are numerous restaurants and clubs to enjoy throughout the resort.

The beautiful Main Dining room decorated in blue, yellow and green.

Prime 44 West has a sports bar feel and is decorated to honor West Virginia native and NBA legend Jerry West.

The Twelve Oaks at Greenbriar is a high-end lounge decorated in an equestrian theme.

In 2008, the county where the Greenbriar is located approved a measure that allows casino-style gambling at the hotel, this is the entrance to the Casino Club that opened in 2010.

There are several shops to visit while staying at the Greenbriar, here is a look at the Men’s shop.

Of course, there are activities galore for you and your family and friends at the Greenbriar, all nestled in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains.
